Culture Warrington is proud to present Waves (Grandma’s House) – a full-scale, knitted sculptural installation by Associate Artist Marie Jones, depicting her grandmother Margaret’s home in Great Sankey!
Floating down from the rigging at Parr Hall, Marie invites visitors to walk through the front door, between the walls and into the rooms used most by her grandma.
Knitted in neon green and white acrylic yarn, the house is not only an act of devotion and labour, but a material reflection of contemporary domestic life. It’s soft walls stretch up high blurring the lines between memory, monument and make-believe evoking both shelter and dream.
Though Waves (Grandma’s House) is built to scale, its grid-like surface of pixels translated into stitches distorts reality. The effect mirrors memory: up close, the image disappears into abstraction. It is only with distance, that the house comes into focus.
While much of Marie’s practice is rooted in her own experience, it welcomes viewers to bring their own associations and memories into these spaces. The buildings we elevate into our homes one day become someone else’s, and our memories of the quiet spectacle of domesticity become suspended in time.
With support from Arts Council England, Marie has hosted public workshops at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery, inviting participants to help knit sections of the house. Each contribution has been documented, and the names of those involved will be shared as part of the final installation.
To honour this collective effort, all contributors will be invited to a special performance on Parr Hall’s rare Cavaillé-Coll pipe organ, staged in dialogue with the suspended sculptural house. This extension of the project makes the work not just a sculptural installation but a collaborative, archival, and performative act, transforming a collective effort into a resonant and shared experience…
