In today’s session, we will use items in the museum’s collections which were brought back from West Africa hidden inside a cargo of bonny palm oil casks which were being shipped by Messrs. Joseph Crosfields and Son Ltd for use in their soap manufacturing business. The items mainly consist of jewellery, needles, knives, tools and weapons made from brass and iron. Using these objects as a starting point, we will go on to look at how the trade in palm oil during the 19th century, also fed into the slave trade, and the links locally that we can find evidence for that demonstrate both an involvement in the slave trade and also campaigns against slavery.
